How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle

Four patterned pickleball paddles and balls

Compare the shape, handle and construction to narrow your search.

Choose the contact area and reach

A longer paddle changes reach and handling; a wider design changes the available face shape. Start by considering where you normally make contact and how consistently you meet the ball.

Check the handle

Handle length matters if you use two hands. Grip circumference affects how comfortably you hold the paddle. An overgrip changes both size and weight, so include it in your trial.

Treat thickness as one variable

A 14 mm or 16 mm label is not a complete description of power or control. Core materials, face construction, shape and mass distribution also matter. Comparisons within the same model family are more informative than thickness comparisons between unrelated products.

Check the exact model before purchase

If you plan to enter organized competition, verify the current approval status for that event and the precise model. Then check local availability, warranty and your full equipment budget.

Compare the available handle space

The Hyperion C2 variants list a 5.5 in handle; Essentials lists 4.75 in. If you play a two-handed backhand, try your usual hand position on both. Total paddle length is a separate measurement.
